About the Department
Chemistry is the Most Excellent Child of Intellect and Art
– Sir Cyril Norman Hinshelwood
The Department of Chemistry is an integral part of Bharathiyar Arts & Science College for Women, dedicated to providing quality education in chemical sciences and developing scientific knowledge among students. Chemistry is a fundamental science that plays a significant role in medicine, agriculture, industry, environmental protection, food science and technological advancement. Established in 2003 and developed as a research department from 2014, the Department of Chemistry combines conceptual learning with laboratory practice. It supports rural women in building scientific curiosity, accuracy, research orientation and practical competence for higher education and industry. The department aims to provide a strong foundation in chemical principles through a balanced combination of theoretical instruction and practical laboratory training. It encourages students to develop scientific curiosity, analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities and research aptitude. The Department of Chemistry focuses on the systematic understanding of the major branches of chemistry, including Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry. The curriculum provides students with knowledge of chemical reactions, molecular structures, chemical bonding, thermodynamics, reaction mechanisms, instrumental methods of analysis and the applications of chemistry in everyday life. Classroom teaching is supported by assignments, seminars, presentations, group discussions, demonstrations and practical sessions. The department encourages student-centred learning and continuous academic improvement. Students are motivated to participate actively in academic activities, develop independent learning habits and apply scientific concepts to real-life situations. Practical education is an essential component of chemistry. Laboratory sessions provide opportunities for students to develop experimental skills, accuracy, observation, interpretation of results and scientific documentation. Students gain experience in qualitative and quantitative analysis, volumetric analysis, preparation of chemical compounds, chemical estimations and other experiments prescribed in the curriculum. Appropriate emphasis is placed on laboratory safety, careful handling of chemicals, waste disposal and ethical scientific practices. The department encourages the use of modern and effective teaching methodologies to improve student engagement and learning outcomes. These include ICT-enabled teaching, PowerPoint presentations, laboratory demonstrations, student seminars, assignments, quizzes, project work and collaborative learning. Students are encouraged to participate in academic competitions, conferences, workshops, guest lectures and other educational programmes to broaden their knowledge and develop communication, teamwork, leadership and presentation skills. The department promotes scientific curiosity and research aptitude among students. Project work, experimental investigations, seminars and scientific discussions help students understand research methods and develop independent thinking. Students are encouraged to explore emerging areas such as Green Chemistry, Nanotechnology, Polymer Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Materials Science and Environmental Chemistry. These areas highlight the importance of chemistry in addressing contemporary scientific, industrial and environmental challenges. Skill development programmes form an important part of the department's academic activities. Workshops, certificate courses, hands-on training, industrial visits and guest lectures help students gain practical knowledge and improve their professional competencies. Environmental awareness programmes and activities related to water conservation, waste management, pollution prevention and sustainable resource utilisation encourage students to become environmentally responsible citizens. The department also supports career guidance and motivates students to acquire the technical and soft skills necessary for employment and higher education.
